monday made it! We painted and some WBT subway art

Short and sweet today. My wrists hurt from painting!
We have NEVER< ever, never been allowed to paint our walls at school
and suddenly we are! No complaints here!
My back wall {which is the main focus in the room} was a hideous mauvy color
now it is LOL Green {from Disney Glidden paint!}
I also picked a color for the other walls, but I am not sure I am up for that. Not now any way!

see! It matches my fadeless paper!

and I just rolled out some new updated Whole Brain Teaching classroom rules posters.
Subway art is kinda addictive. I played with these fonts, colors, and sizes for two days!
I am sure I will make some minor changes, but for now they are quite perfect for me!
They are a freebie, so they come as is

and I am currently working on a vintage chalkboard decor pack because I'm kinda in love with the whole idea of it all! I think it's so pretty!

but I will be working on it for awhile because everyday is spent here...

watching Jake's 8 year old All-Star team! We were runners up for the district and are trekking to the state tourney this weekend! Go Bears!! I'm so excited for them! It's hard to get this many boys that are so good and sweet! I love them!
Happy Tuesday "making it"!

A BIG ol' winner and Currently March!

drum roll please...
the winner of a whole lot of goodies from the blogging bests and $25 gift cert. to TpT is...
graphics purchased from Miss Tiina and font from Kimberly Geswein

And I am kinda sad the giveaway is over...
but it's March and time for currently with Farley, so I guess I'll be ok!

listening ok y'all it is only 7ish am here and I do not want to be up this early! But all of us who have little ones know they hate getting up M-F and wake up the roosters on S-S! ugh but thrift shop is playing on the mac!
loving my spiky flats that I have been looking for forever! I told the kids they are now my Monday shoes" and they better watch out.
If you follow me on Instagram You've seen these!
On a funny side note, I have these "leg warmers" at school. Not the 80s kind, but these kids that run to sit directly under my feet at the rug and feel my shoes. I mean, I do have awesome shoes, but I would like to not have to shave my lower legs once in awhile, but nope...not with these leg warmers around. Sometimes I feel a little bit harassed by 3pm and have to tell Mr. Lamb that my touching quota has been met! So maybe these will help?...no. They were pressing on them to see if the spikes would leave dents on their fingers!

thinking I should not be sore from Just Dance! Oh my. I am so outta shape! But we dance to 2 videos each day for a brain break. I stumbled upon them on You Tube and we are so loving it! I love watching them get down! They are so much better than me! Our favs: Super Mario, Beauty and a Beat (ok, my fav, but it's way too hard!), Pump it Up, and anything Flo-Rida. No dirty lyrics and it's just plain old fun! And the Eye of the Tiger is like kick boxing! There are also plenty of Kids ones if you prefer like the gummy bear song.

wanting and needing are pretty self explanatory!

like ronald reagan. with all the presidential reading lately, I love sharing about reagan! I love him! I think of him as my president because he was president when I was born. My uncle worked at the white house and my padres got a congrats letter from him when I was born...so sweet
love riding. alone. in my car. with the music loud. I love 90s alternative. If I could go back in time I'd go to see Nirvana Unplugged. I have an obsession with that album. I'm off to go to McDonalds alone any minute...bliss! I'm also a little obsessed with Thrift Shop right now too! Have you seen the video! ha! It's dirty. earmuffs!
hate rude and rowdy. pretty much describes my class these days. We even had a 2nd grade parent meeting due to the new legislation in our state that says any child who does not meet grade level standards at the end of 3rd grade will remain in third grade. That was a little wake up, but only for the parents that showed up! Do you all have this new legislation?

let’s get professional

so when it comes to doing things I want to do-I do not think twice.
Slide2
My third year I decided I wanted to go back to school. Back in the old days when we only had 2 kids! Our district reimbursed for Reading degrees at that time, so it was perfect. I learned more as a grad student than anywhere ever {besides the classroom of course!} In fact, I loved it so much my professor asked it I wanted to continue with some doctoral coursework. YES Please! But life happened. I got pregnant in my last semester and with 3 kiddos at home, I know I’d be a single mom if I went straight back into school!
Slide1
Then, my 7th year, my friend and I had been moved apart {sniffles} so we decided let’s do our National Boards together! We both did Middle Childhood Generalist which has the biggest UN-success rate, but we both got them!
So what’s next? I once thought I’d teach for.ev.er, but I no longer think that’s the case. For a hot minute I really wanted to work with student teachers at the college level. My student teaching experience was hell and I didn’t want anyone else to go through what I did {another post perhaps}
But then I fell back t-totally in love with teaching when I moved to 2nd grade. Even though I absolutely love what I do, I know I want something else. Something more. Teaching is the most wonderful profession I can imagine, it is never boring, but the hoops we jump through are getting a little much for me these days. I never planned on renewing my National Boards. I figured another 10 years and I would do something else in the field.
My dream is magazine layout…weird, right!? I LOVE making newsletters, worksheets, and fliers to go home. I actually volunteer to make them for the school!
and on that topic, one goal for the upcoming 2013 is learning to turn doodles into digital art. I just snagged a Bamboo tablet so we will see. My mom got me the best patterning book for Christmas! It’s called Zenspirations! Check it out! She also got me the huge pack of Crayola’s, colored pencils, and markers. And I got myself a Silhouette! Bring on the crafting!
doodle
but until then, I cannot sit back and wait. I decided this summer I would go for earning my Whole Brain Certification.
Slide3
I planned on starting a PLC at school where we would watch Tuesday night podcasts on Thursdays, but it didn’t happen. We have weekly grade level meetings that are required PLC times, I am now trained and help run the Kind Kids Club for Rachel’s Challenge, I am secretary for our PTO and school leadership team, not to mention webmaster for the school and we’ve changed over programs again so everything with be revamped and I haven’t even started it yet….run on sentence shows my anxiety over this. Needless to say, it never got up and running. But I still plan in doing this!! In order to get certified, you have to post on the forums on blog so many such and such times. I haven’t done this in awhile! Be expecting some soon! Here are the requirements in you are interested
So whatever the future brings, WBT certification, a doctorate degree, or a new job completely, you’ll have to hear all about it! Cause I do not plan on quitting the blogging world!

welcome to my dojo {a tutorial}

ok, have you heard of Class Dojo and just didn’t feel up to it? Dive on in! The water is fine! I heard about the online management tool last year from a fellow teach who thought it would be up my alley. I was reluctant. I liked my card flipping. I didn’t do it.

this year. I was all set for clip chart with my Whole Brain teaching scoreboard. Used scoreboard very successfully the first 2 weeks on school. I planned on adding more individual management with my clip chart {or practice cards} the coming Monday. Threatened rowdy students with it!

Then my middle Lamb comes in after school and says “why aren’t you using class dojo? Your kids would be better if you did!” {my kiddos are great fyi-he just wants to be better than us!}

Then at our staff meeting, my teammate {who had been using it all year and is my son’s teacher} presented it to us. I was hooked! Oh.EM.GEE. The number one feature that got me was the parent reports. Ugh. Can I tell you I hate writing behavior reports in our Thursday folders! I have just slopped something down since I write anything major in the daily planners. Just a waste of my time.

Here’s a little rundown for you. I am sorry it’s not a catchy, appealing video tutorial. I still am not sure where CamStudio saves my stuff…

go to classdojo.com

here’s my class

Now for the management during class. Little Jake is grabs his book box and gets to reading at his own little spot right away. I need to let him know I noticed because the rest of the kiddos are still roaming around.

Slide4

image

not that it ever happens, but if little Jake wasn’t following directions, I’d just go to negative instead.

image

and here’s what’s on my tv screen. DING is the positive sound. Enter the Pavlov dog experiment period. Serious;y, everyone is on task now and I never said a word. My fear with this was that I want kids to physically go and MOVE something positive or negative. That’s why I like clip charts and flipping. But I can still get that! I can have kids award positives for themselves, or negatives. They just go and click the mouse.

Now for the reports. I use 2 at the moment. First is the class report I share daily with students. If we beat the number of positives from the previous day, we earn a paw. {our mascot is a bear cub-We are a PBIS school and we have to hand these out schoolwide for good behaviors}

image

but I can also print or email individual reports to parents!! yay!! I can add daily notes too if I want

image

But the BEST feature BY FAR is using my iPhone as a remote! Holy smokes!

image

the first day I used it I was in the hallway as they were unpacking. Suddenly they hear the dreaded DONG on the negative…all eyes are sweeping the room. How’d she do that??? I shared that my phone is right here with me all day, I can award from the restroom, cafeteria, lab, hall, anywhere! If I’m in the room, they see it on the screen, if we are out of the room, they notice their totals. They are very focused on these.

and fyi-you must be in IE on your PC to get the smartphone remote to work. Who knows. quirky technology!

Here’s what it looks like

image

Why? Every other Friday, they buy coupons with their points.

Our first store is tomorrow. Points will be cleared and spent. I am using Christie’s prize pass catalog because they are not tangible items I have to buy and they love them. We added a few specific things, too. Nothing is over 30 points or under 10. I am choosing to clear them out because I do not want them to get to 30 and just quit.

And my parents love it too. They can {and do} go online anytime and see what’s up.

well, I hope I have at least convinced you to visit the site, or even give it a try! And I am still using wbt rules and other features. I normally stop using scoreboard in September anyhow.

Happy managing!!

Slow Sunday and a Custom Giveaway!

I really do not have much to blog about today! We were at baseball tournament ALL weekend. Middle Lamb was the catcher for 4 games in less than 20 hours. Check out this picture if this tells you how happy I was to be at home today!

IMG_1367

And we were here Friday and Saturday all day! Bless their hearts! Just missed making it to Nationals, but I think we needed a break! At least I did!

In other news I am excited that tomorrow I will be on the interview committee for our new Assistant Principal. I was not all that excited when I received 10 resumes in the mailbox last week, but then I thought about it. I get to sneak into my classroom a week earlier than other people on my hall! I like being there all alone. I turn up the tv or radio and sweat it out. I will be arriving a little early for those interviews! My classroom is completely empty right now because they ripped up the carpet. I am anxious to see the tile. I have already started sketching out where things will be. I love having options!

And now for that custom giveaway. I gained over 100 followers last week during my wbt sereis! That tells me people are interested in trying it out. I may even take a trip to a conference with a blog buddy if I can convince Mr. Lamb I will not be abducted! I have been working on 2 classroom themes for the past month. I have bits and pieces posted on TpT, not to mention the WBT starter packs {now free} on there, too. I wanted to offer up a FREE CUSTOM wbt pack in any theme of the winner’s choice. Here are the deets.

1. 5 rules posters
2. Practice cards
3. BInder cover for all your free ebooks
4. scoreboard icons
5. Power Pix headings for math and ela
6. Super Improvers wall heading and icons for student stickers
7. anchor charts for the Big 7 and genius ladder
8. parent letter
9. Optional Clip chart if you will use one
All this will be coordinating with any theme of your choice.

You can choose from ANY Thistlegirl set, and most any KPM or Melonheadz set. I can also work with a color scheme if you so choose! And it’s easy to win!! Just leave me a comment telling me what aspect of wbt is the most intriguing to you or something you would like to try this year. Oh, and make sure you are a follower!

Little Lamb and I just painted our nails with my new magnetic polish! Exciting. I snagged some doing a little Target shopping of course! We got the third color-it matches Mock Sunkey. Happy July!

whole brain teaching f.a.q.

I absolutely cannot wait to get into my room and setup some of the newest ideas from wbt {at least new to me}. This coming week I will be working on my Universal Homework model {UHM}, Power Pix-I dreamed about where to post these in my classroom last night!, and incorporating the Whole Brain Writing Model this year. I am never afraid of change! Now, I’ve gotten lots of emails and comments with questions about wbt this week, so this post will hopefully answer those.

{1} How did you begin using Whole Brain Teaching? It seems overwhelming!

Um, yes it does! You begin here. Register as a member at wbt.com. it’s the red box on the right!

read it! It has everything you need to get started then some! It’s a free download. Just click the book cover. I also love e-books! I can read them on my laptop or print them, which I do for ones I need to riffle through!

The first step I took was the 5 Rules and Scoreboard. This is Level 1.
This is really all you truly need to get your feet wet. I still watch in awe at the “power teachers” in the You Tube videos. I am tired watching them. But after I moved to 2nd grade and no longer got the chance to catch my breath until the dismissal bell rang, I knew I could do this! It makes me excited!

the 5 Rules are our class rules, no more, no less. Rule 5 is the best because it covers anything. Keep your dear teacher happy! What’s not to love.

Scoreboard is your ultimate motivator for the first 9 weeks of school. If you have a great class, you may not need anything else! This also allowed me time to read more on the website because I was not having to add anything else to my management. You can always go to Level 2 {practice cards} sooner if needed. It’s very flexible.

{2} What about parents? How do you get them on board?
Parents? Who cares what they think! Ok, really…I have not had a parent question the whole brain method per se, however, there are parents that absolutely will not like if the whole class has extra homework because of Scoreboard or if they lose 5 minutes of recess.
You may have realized I am a blunt person. I do tell my parents at Open House all about my management system. I explain that in the beginning we work as a team. I have used every reward method under the sun. However, I am a parent too and I find myself getting a little irritated when my middle schooler has silent lunch because of 2 kids who refuse to behave in class on a daily basis. This is where the Guff Counter comes in. If it is truly just 1 or 2 kids in your class keeping the smilies on the scoreboard from happening, they should not be included! Remove their support with their peers. Remove their “power”. Thankfully, I have never gotten to this level, but it sounds pretty powerful! My team teacher actually used it with a heck of a class she had 2 years ago.

Another thing is not sending home the practice card notes. Like I said in an earlier post, I write in assignment books about daily behavior as required my my administration. This is where I stop. I truly believe every day is a fresh start. Parents still know if we had any issues and everyone is happy.

{3}Do you use everything on the website?
In a dream world, I absolutely would. Everything I have used from WBT I have adored. Each year I aim to implement more of what they offer. This year I will play host to a PLC at school where we will watch the weekly boradcasts as a group, try things out, then come back to share the next week.
The very first thing I ever saw from wbt.com was Super Speed 100 and 1000. It was offered to us as an intervention for RtI nearly 3 years ago. I looked into it, joined the site, downloaded both, then downloaded Super Speed Math, too! I have all my students do Super Speed with partners supervised by my assistant 3 days per week.
Then last year I downloaded Crazy Reading Professor. My students LOVED it to say the least. It’s the ultimate in comprehension. In pairs {or as a read aloud as I have used it} students read the text aloud while the partners uses gestures to act out what is going on. Talk about challenging! Great for guided reading, too! I did not use it enough to blog about it, so that will come with time!
This year brings Power Pix, Universal Homework Model, and writing instruction along with a change in my lesson planning. They have a great 5 point lesson plan!

So stay tuned as I journey through another year! Tomorrow I will announce a WBT giveaway!! Woot-woot!

Whole Brain series Post #5: Lines and Grim News

If you ever were to walk by my classroom, you’d hear any number of things coming from my mouth…”You’re such a goob”, “REALLY!?, and “I’m gonna paint your backyard red!, and “Oh, Sookie, sookie, now.” are just a few class favs. Can you tell my class is quite close knit! I love having a relationship with my students were I can talk to them like they are my own!
But you will also hear lots of Class?/Yes!, Teach.ok, switch, and LINES-LINES-LINES! When I am ready for my kids to line up to leave the classroom, I clap once and simultaneously chant “Lines!”. They respond with “lines, lines; lines” as they are lining up. Now the point of this for me is to get them lined up properly and quickly. Chairs must be pushed in and we are single file with a smile {per the sign above the door!} We always line up the same-number order. We also change line leaders each week, but they always keep up with that kind of stuff. I train them well! I used to think that all this lining up and being in order was nonsense when I taught big, bad fourth graders. But as I enter my 10th year, I know that kids have to be trained taught procedures. They actually crave order. I teach them in the beginning so they can carry out procedures on their own-my ultimate goal!

Slide7
SWITCH! ok, to change gears. Did you read the post about Teach/ok yesterday? If not, go read up then come back.
You often have students who are perfectly fine out of the spotlight. They may be unsure or lack confidence, or maybe they are just indifferent, or even just super shy. Regardless, all kids need to be heard. Using Switch will allow everyone, not just you and the overtakers, to speak. Straight from wbt: “
When you are using Teach/Okay you'll notice that you have some students who are chronic talkers and some who are chronic listeners.  We want the talkers to learn to listen and the listeners to come out of their shells and talk!  This is where the Switch command comes in handy.
Divide your class so that your top students are paired with your bottom students and your middle students with your middle students (of course, you don't reveal the basis for the pairing to your kids.)  Next, count off your students in ones and twos.  If you have an odd number of kids in your class, one group will have two ones.“ end quote
Now I have a nag about this. My students always know who’s top and who’s not. We are not fooling anybody here. I tell mine to find someone smarter every time! But, this is a good way to pair for some discussion. And I love the part about listeners learning to talk and talkers learning to listen. Hallelujah!
Here is a video that I LOVE! I love her transitions. I think these can be the most stressful times in any classroom. I like the Bodies and Chairs! at 3:25 ish is the best! Walking syllables!

and now for some grim news. The Reaper has left the neighborhood. I don’t know if he walked off from boredom since his master is honeymooning or if those shiesty looking teenagers I spotted yesterday snatched him, but I am a bit sad to not have him waving good morning today. It was trash day…hmmm…
Not sure what neighborhood news I will have. I guess I could tell you about the lady next door who only acknowledges Mr. Lamb, or the strange situation with the married people on the corner that cannot decide if they live together and she’s always flirting my the landscaper, or maybe the chic down the street that I went to high school with and she used to sit topless at parties…but those just are not as interesting!

whole brain teaching series post #4: classy copyright

First up, copyright…All of my items were removed from TpT. I am hoping to be able to post here, but am seeking permission first. Stay tuned.
Today’s post is on one of my favorite aspects of wbt. Attention getters. I don’t know about you, but I like attention. And when I want attention, I better get it.
Here’s how I used to go about bringing the class back together again. I used to cross my arms, wait, stare with an irritated look until some of the kids caught one and nudged their peers to get quiet. It works, but it takes awhile and I demand attention promptly! Enter Class/Yes! Now when I need my little dears to quiet down, I say CLASS, they respond with YES. If they don’t, guess what!? Score one for me! But they always do. Why? It’s because of the way I say it. WBT.com calls it tomfoolery. I love that. You sort of trick the kids into thinking it’s fun to behave!
Slide4
Here’s what I mean…transition time in the room. Ohhh, claaass, CLASS, class. Ohhh, yeeesss, YES, yes! they respond. They must match my tone and intonation. I love it! Sometimes I whisper, they whisper. Sometimes I use an accent, they use an accent. If I stretch out claaaaass, they stretch out yeeeesss. It works folks! I teach this day one.

Another great first step I do day one is Teach-OK. This is great for that perfect practice makes perfect I discussed yesterday. It’s great in my minilessons, too! Rather than droning on captivating my audience solo, I intro a concept, they turn to a partner sitting right next to them and repeat what I just said {gestures and all cause I am super handsy and I was completely unaware until I had to watch those National Board videos a hundred times!}. Then Classity-class. Yessity-Yes. We are back. If you think them turning and talking on their own is too much, then assign everyone to be a 1 or a 2. This way they turn and talk to another number.
Slide5
at about 3:45 some teach-ok happens. Ok, I also commented back to the dear sweet parent that says their kid would be bored. I couldn’t help it, plus it’s under my 13 year old’s username! That little Lego Storm trooper must be a teacher in disguise!

I will also be doing a giveaway next week where the winner can choose any theme they’d like for a pack!

wbt series post #3:practice makes perfect…errrr.

ever heard “practice makes perfect”? It’s a farce. Lie. “PERFECT practice makes perfect” is truly the case. That would be like sending home a page of subtraction problems and the student doing them all incorrectly. Now they have practiced the wrong way and most likely ingrained the wrong method too! Our former {sniffle} AP shared with us that it takes practicing a procedure 20 times the correct way before you learn it. TWENTY TIMES folks! I always share this research with my students so they know the reason we practice lining up, procedures, and walking through the halls!
All this leads me to the practice cards, or level 2, of Whole Brain Teaching. What are they? Practice cards are simply cards with each of the 5 rules on them. If a student breaks a rule, they need to practice it. They slip a card wherever you keep track of these things {probably a chart or sitting on their desk} and when the time comes, they practice for 2 minutes per card. Literally, our kids sit on the sidewalk at recess and do the gestures for 2 minutes. We sit and gossip to “raise your hand for permission to speak” almost daily!!
Here’s the lowdown straight from wbt.com: “The Scoreboard addresses behavior issues in your class as a whole. Practice Cards target individual student behavior.  In brief, label each pocket of a card pocket chart with a student’s name or number.  When a student breaks one of the five classroom rules, place a white card with that rule number in his/her card pocket.  Students rehearse for two minutes the gesture for the rule they’ve broken at recess.  At the end of the day, a note goes home asking parents to help students with additional rule practice.  With the exception of students from unreliable families, the white card stays in the card pocket until the note comes back from home.
White cards are used when students break a classroom rule.
Purple cards are used to reward students for following a rule.
Green cards are used to help students practice a rule in class.” end quote!
There are 2 things I did change to meet the needs of my class. I only use practice cards for rule breaking, no purple because that is what the clip chart is for. and 2. I no longer send a note home. I sign student planners each afternoon and students color in their color from the clip chart onto a calendar. This addresses the issue enough for me.
here are my practice cards. FREE download!
viewer
here is the chart I used. It’s actually a calculator chart-but it’s already numbered! All my kids have a “number” so it was perfect.

If a student broke a rule, they put a practice card of whatever they needed to practice behind their number. I’ll be honest, I never recorded this anywhere. I glanced at the chart before lining up for recess. I relied on students to remember if they had to practice or not. Trust me, the other students remember!
here is a picture from a great blog of how I WILL BE setting up my practice cards this year since we will be going back to the clip chart. I love this idea. I think she has each student’s name on here in abc order and they slip the practice card behind their name-see how Jhayden has to practice raising his little hand? However, I am going to put one copy of the practice card vertically and have them put their number beside what they need to practice. I don’t want the practice card chart to be too cute looking with their sweet little faces on it! {I really should have waited to set up my room first before doing this series!} This will all be right beside my clip chart that I hand on my white board.

Why back to the Clip Chart?

When I began implementing wbt, I did not like the clip chart. I felt I did not keep up with it to fidelity. I did it for awhile then abandoned them for traditional green, yellow, red card flipping. I feel the physical act of the student getting up to flip their card is pretty powerful not only for that student, but for the rest of the class, too. Towards the end of April the warriors got restless. I added a purple index card to my behavior chart. If a student was going above expectations, they flipped to purple. It worked great! They wanted to know that if they got to purple, were they “safe” from yellow. No. What about going back to green, am I in trouble. No. I was thinking, geez this is the clip chart! Where is my darned clip chart in this closet!
So I am completely circumventing the index cards and going with the clip chart from the beginning this year! I am excited to get the cumbersome pocket chart rack out of the way, too! I shared my clip chart download yesterday as a freebie.
I hope this was not too much info overload. I am still feeling a little under the weather and may or may not be doped up on Nyquil…but there is so much I want to share! Up next, class/yes and teach/ok! I will also be doing other procedures, homework, and faq posts.

Whole brain teaching series #2 Score!

Sorry-no post last night. I feel a tad under the weather plus back to back ballgames makes for a tired teacher mom. But, I will give you a freebie to make up for it!

ok, scoreboard. After teaching the rules, this also starts week 1 in my classroom. Scoreboard is your first motivator. The premise is that all students work together towards a goal {beating YOU on scoreboard}. I have a list of rewards that we randomly draw from each day {as the year winds along, it becomes each week-like April and May}. I really just type a list with the kids, cut it up, and put in a little container on my round table. Every thing is a big deal to 7 year olds, even who gets to pick the slip of paper out!

some ideas I use: half homework page, 2 minute dance party {a fav}, watch a youtube video {usually Thriller this year}, extra 5 mins of recess, sit where you want at lunch, sock feet, puzzles at end of day, a funny Mrs. Lamb as a kid story, an embarrassing Mrs. Lamb’s sister story, a Mr. Lamb story, etc. These are not BIG rewards.

Here is a b-e-a-u=tiful diagram of my front whiteboard. Off topic, this will become my back board this year. I never write on whiteboard and this will be my word wall.

score

you like this don’t you! And yes, I DO use My Melody and Kuromi on my scoreboard. And it’s even blocked off with Hello Kitty Duck tape. The boys think it’s cool, too. By the end of the year we used Angry Birds and a Pig. As you can see, it’s nothing spectacular. However, my sock monkeys will be!!! You can also see my behavior chart under the apple tree. This will be replaced by the clip chart. More on that tomorrow.

score

ok, back to business. In the beginning, the whole class is in on this behavior thing together. That’s probably the hardest part for teachers and parents. There is not a punishment, there is just not a reward for losing in scoreboard. The kids also need to WIN in the beginning or they won’t buy into it. There really shouldn’t be more of a 3 point margin ever.

How to get points: when someone follows a rule, has a great answer, says something sweet. quickly gets to work, one point for every table that’s on the right page, etc.
How YOU {the teacher"} get points-just the opposite of how they do. blurting, rule forgetting, too loud in hall/line/etc.
the great thing is-nothing is set in stone. If they bother me, I get a point! Easy! Just remember, they are not LOSING a point, you are just GETTING one. That’s why it’s a motivator.

Now here is a great, no other way to learn about it, video with Chris Biffle teaching college students about wbt. At 1:30 ish in the video is scoreboard. Watch it! You’ll watch the whole thing, you can’t help it, but pay special attention here.

Here are some GREAT variations on scoreboard from WBT
http://www.powerteachers.net/Whole-Brain-Teching/Levels/Level-1-The-Scoreboard.html

tomorrow are the practice cards! plus how to use them with the clip chart. exciting!

oh yea, here’s that freebie! A place to STACHE their stuff!

whole brain post #1: rules, and babies

I love Whole Brain Teaching. I can’t stress enough how it makes the day more fun for me and that’s what important, right? I am going to do a series of posts this week about my journey with wbt and how I incorporate it daily. I will be working on certification this year and leading a PLC at school.
I started using a few strategies here and there in my last year of 4th grade. However, I really got down and dirty last year, which was my first year in second.
Today’s post is all about the 5 rules.
It can seem extremely overwhelming in the beginning. I remember nights when Drew wouldn’t sleep and we’d watch Whole Brain power teachers on YouTube so I could learn how to teach it! I start every first day of school {ok, the past two years, but forever after this too!} teaching my 5 simple rules. They really get a kick out of rule 5! Each rules has a gesture. We practice them every single morning for the first 2 weeks. After that, if someone breaks a rule, say gets up without raising their hand, I just stop mid-whatever and say “Rule Number 3”, the class chimes in “Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat.” and gives the stink eye!
I think what makes it work so well for me is the active participation. I used to make the rules with the kids on the first day. We’d have long discussions about it, make lists, defend choices. But, in the end, we always had the same rules I had in mind. Who was I kidding?!
Now, I also used the red, green, and yellow cards too. I am moving back to the clip chart this year for two reasons. At the end of this past year, we added a purple card that you could move UP to beyond green. I strongly feel those kids that try to be all they can be in class deserve some recognition. and Two, I made an adorable clip chart then uploaded it to Vistaprint. It’s just too cute not to use! You can download it below. I ordered it as a small banner. I will use magnets rather than clothespins though. 25 clothespins simply do not fit on Ready to Learn each morning!

Clip Chart
Now, how to use both the clip chart AND wbt? It’s simple really. With the clip chart, the rules can be whatever you like! If they “clip down” they will get a practice card. More on those in tomorrow’s post!
oh yea, and the babies! Our quail we hatched in May were released at the park today! They are so big! I wanted to share a few moments of the release. It was a huge deal lemme tell ya. There were 6 people there! 4 were my kids and me!

the finger and sock monkeys

NO, don’t give sock monkey the finger. Just use them to signal that if you don’t get to the potty, the teacher is gonna be cleaning it up!
y’all know that Nikki at Melonheadz is ah.ma.zing! I asked her for some hand signals that I use in my class and a day later-there they were in my inbox. She rocks. and is talented, too!

these turned out perfect!!! I plan on posting this week about my management because I think I am finally at a place where I am happy with it! If you’ve been hanging around awhile, you know I use Whole Brain Teaching. These signals correlate with our rules and are easy to remember. Especially if they get up to ask me something and I send them back to their seat until they can signal me…is it just my kids that can hunt me down anywhere to tell me nonsense…please say your littles do that, too!
sock monkeys-speaking of Whole Brain teaching, I finally remade their rules posters, practice cards, and Big Seven posters for my own classroom.
