great schema Intro, purple pets and sticky notes

Here’s an idea from a workshop I attended awhile back, but it’s worth sharing. We discussed teaching kiddos about how connections are made and new learning become permanent. The presenter had a drawing of a brain with different areas from our experiences. So this is how the lesson went.

1. Introduce the topic to be discussed-we did pumpkins

2. Ask what they already know. For instance I said I knew pumpkins were a fruit.

3. Ask how they know that-I answered that I’d read it in a book.

4. Put glow-in-the-dark puffy paint ($2 at  Wal-Mart) on the area of the brain that says books.

5. Repeat until most of the brain it painted in. Take a restroom break and tell the kids that when you return, you will show them how making connections lights up our brain, or creates more synapses.

When the paint dries it glows in the dark! It was awesome and a moment kids would remember. Of course, you wouldn’t want to do it repeatedly-but what a wonderful intro!

Here’s a picture of her brain with paint (I did not take a picture of it in the dark!)

Our poem of the week is My Neighbor’s Dog is Purple. I love using it to refresh them on mental images, but more importantly teaching how they change as we get new information. I got the idea from Deanna Jump. And yes, these are related! Based on their schema, they draw a dog {Chihuahua, German Shepherd, etc}. They color it purple. It’s what the poem says. THEN you read the 3rd stanza

My neighbor's dog looks nasty,

it has a wicked smile....

before my neighbor painted it,

it was a crocodile.

Now our mental image takes a left turn! I also use the Green Giant poem she recommends. Our counselor uses the same poem for listening skills. She reads it aloud, they listen, then draw and see how many details they can remember. It’s a good one!

And yet one more thing…we finally started our story map stickies this week.I know you’ve seen this poster. It’s a goodie and all over Pinterest, but I love Rebecca’s. I use it as a predicting activity. This also requires a little schema and background knowledge {and common sense}.I write the author, title, character names, a phrase for the problem, solution, theme, and one or two events. I hand out the stickies to whomever I can reach without getting up from my comfy butterfly chair, and they place them on the poster where they think they go. Of course we usually have to change a few. I remember last year someone placed Eve Bunting on the “problem” section! haha! Anywho, it’s a great little part of my weekly routine!

One more day this week. We have Friday off! Woot woot! And it’s Mr. Lamb’s b-day. I actually get to have lunch with him! Lucky guy!

working on the chain gang

As a part of our Math Expressions addition and subtraction unit, we have a lesson on expressions and equations. The kiddos give me expressions that equal a given number. We keep repeating until we’ve made a chain of equations or an equation chain. I almost skipped the lesson because I wasn’t sure they needed it, but I’m glad I didn’t! What a hoot! Rather than having each kiddo write an equation on one sentence strip, they worked in 3’s. Each came up with 3 unique expressions equaling the groups number.

9=3x3=4+5=6+3=9x1=100-91 etc.

Not only did they do well, they added some comedy. Geez!

carolina girls! the best in the world!

Hey, it’s what the song says. You can’t argue!

This Saturday I went to my first blogger meet-up! I drove 2 hours to Columbia to meet up with some wonderful girls, talk blogging, kids, TpT, and everything in between. I met blogging celebrities and some bloggers I’d never heard of. If you’ve not attended a meet-up yet, DO IT! It’s a riot talking to someone whose words you read daily-but have never actually spoken to!

And thank you so much to Rebecca for getting all the names and blogs matched for me!

In attendance {make sure you follow their blogs for fabulous ideas--no matter what grade it is!}:

from left to right- sort of!

Autumn, Ashley, and Tammy from Fanatical in First Grade
Kim (starting her blog soon, right Kim?!?)
Ginger from Gingersnaps Treats for Teachers
Elizabeth from Fun in 4B
Gretchen from Always a Lesson
Hope from 2nd Grade Shenanigans
Dana from 3rd Grade Gridiron
Shasta from The Loop
Heather and Juli from Simple In Second
Amanda from Teaching Maddeness
Amber from Adventures of a Third Grade Teacher
Rachel from The Tattooed Teacher
Elisabeth from Twins, Teaching and Tacos
Rebecca from Landing in K
Natalie from Teachery Tidbits
Lacie from Polka Dots & Pencils

Now, go blog stalk!

A huge thanks to Hope for setting it all up. The restaurant was great {mimosas also help!} And a huge hug to Shasta, Ginger, and Lacie for dragging me around Columbia with them! It is fun to enjoy drinks, cupcakes, drinks, seafood, drinks, and chocolate covered Pringles with some fun girls!!

on a more serious note. I just donated to Tiffany’s Fund. Have you? She’s a friend of The Bubbly Blonde and even if you do not need ALL the items, you could help out a young momma who has just been diagnosed with cancer. You get tons of files donated by amazing teachers! You get a smile in your heart too!

and. I’m getting ready for Constitution Day tomorrow! So far on the to-do list…NOT reciting the preamble like I had to do in school!

Happy Sunday!

september 12th

I love reading September 12 aloud to the kids. Oh! We also got to Fireboat today! Another fav.

I wanted to share what we’ve done to recognize Patriot Day so far. They’ve I’ve been a little slack busy doing all sorts of wonderful things that we don’t seem to finish the task at hand! But I tend to rush things sometimes, so it’s all good.

first off, I ended up not doing my Twin Tower collage. When I was going through all of Nikki’s patriotic clipart, I fell in love with her USA word collage. I copied it! SHhh! I did confess to my grade level since they watched me hold the picture while I transferred it!

I loved it so much, I forgot to add the border! oh well! We also used part of Michaela’s Everyday Heroes craftivity. {I can really stretch this file out! Here’s comes Veteran’s Day and Fire Prevention week!} So precious! The kids LOVED the mustaches! We are working on identifying and writing complete sentences {thanks to Amy} and will transfer from the Venn to paper on Friday.

IMG_1644
working on complete or incomplete sort in groups-we can sure make a mess!

the hero faces are finished-swoon…

I also came upon a new-to-me book called 14 Cows for America. I went to B&N to buy it, saw it was $20, and asked them to just keep it. I’ve got to quit buying hardcover! THEN we were exchanging our books in the media center Monday morning and I saw a copy on the shelf! It was meant to be! And even though when I flipped through it at B&N it looked a little dry-it was wonderful! You’ve got to check this true story out!

Well, now I am gearing up for Constitution Day {It’s required we teach it on the 17th. Is this everywhere?} That’s a pretty difficult area to work with, but I guess if I can get them to understand even a little iota of 9/11, I can teach some Constitution!

AND I am SUPER EXCITED about the Carolina blogger meetup this Saturday. My teammie said I need to get autographs! Seriously! hotel booked. Mr. Lamb on board. can.not.wait!

9-11 with wee ones a repost and a freebie

I am reposting what I did on September 11 of last year. I loved how the bulletin board turned out and hate I did not snap a picture! I will this year! I also put together a few other activities I will do. Download for free on TpT! I cannot wait to see how this activity turns out!

I am linking up with Erica to share 9/11 ideas!

My kiddos had never even heard about the tragedy and I teetered on not even getting in to it for fear they’d have nightmares, but it is a huge part of our national history and completely changed how our country operates. I am SOOOOO glad I did. I have not had a better day yet with these dears. I started by just asking for a show of hands who had ever heard the term “9-11” and when only 1 kid had, I read a news article aloud. It really led to a wonderful discussion. I told them exactly where I was, what I was doing, how there was nothing televised but NYC for at least a week, and how American flags flew everywhere and everyone had a flag magnet on their car. I felt so proud to be an American. Then, my friend across the hall brought her kids over, told them her story, and we all watched the Brain Pop video. {I love those things…}. We also checked out the interactive timeline and the time lapse video of the memorial going up. You must use this site, it is ah-maz-ing
Bookmark these for next year!

Next we made a mosaic of the Twin Towers and added the questions from What the Teacher Wants blog to it. It really turned out beautiful and created a wonderful atmosphere of teamwork in my room {really the first I’ve seen of it}. Like I said, I am so glad I shared this time with them…Red heart

We read some wonderful books too:

welcome to my dojo {a tutorial}

ok, have you heard of Class Dojo and just didn’t feel up to it? Dive on in! The water is fine! I heard about the online management tool last year from a fellow teach who thought it would be up my alley. I was reluctant. I liked my card flipping. I didn’t do it.

this year. I was all set for clip chart with my Whole Brain teaching scoreboard. Used scoreboard very successfully the first 2 weeks on school. I planned on adding more individual management with my clip chart {or practice cards} the coming Monday. Threatened rowdy students with it!

Then my middle Lamb comes in after school and says “why aren’t you using class dojo? Your kids would be better if you did!” {my kiddos are great fyi-he just wants to be better than us!}

Then at our staff meeting, my teammate {who had been using it all year and is my son’s teacher} presented it to us. I was hooked! Oh.EM.GEE. The number one feature that got me was the parent reports. Ugh. Can I tell you I hate writing behavior reports in our Thursday folders! I have just slopped something down since I write anything major in the daily planners. Just a waste of my time.

Here’s a little rundown for you. I am sorry it’s not a catchy, appealing video tutorial. I still am not sure where CamStudio saves my stuff…

go to classdojo.com

here’s my class

Now for the management during class. Little Jake is grabs his book box and gets to reading at his own little spot right away. I need to let him know I noticed because the rest of the kiddos are still roaming around.

Slide4

image

not that it ever happens, but if little Jake wasn’t following directions, I’d just go to negative instead.

image

and here’s what’s on my tv screen. DING is the positive sound. Enter the Pavlov dog experiment period. Serious;y, everyone is on task now and I never said a word. My fear with this was that I want kids to physically go and MOVE something positive or negative. That’s why I like clip charts and flipping. But I can still get that! I can have kids award positives for themselves, or negatives. They just go and click the mouse.

Now for the reports. I use 2 at the moment. First is the class report I share daily with students. If we beat the number of positives from the previous day, we earn a paw. {our mascot is a bear cub-We are a PBIS school and we have to hand these out schoolwide for good behaviors}

image

but I can also print or email individual reports to parents!! yay!! I can add daily notes too if I want

image

But the BEST feature BY FAR is using my iPhone as a remote! Holy smokes!

image

the first day I used it I was in the hallway as they were unpacking. Suddenly they hear the dreaded DONG on the negative…all eyes are sweeping the room. How’d she do that??? I shared that my phone is right here with me all day, I can award from the restroom, cafeteria, lab, hall, anywhere! If I’m in the room, they see it on the screen, if we are out of the room, they notice their totals. They are very focused on these.

and fyi-you must be in IE on your PC to get the smartphone remote to work. Who knows. quirky technology!

Here’s what it looks like

image

Why? Every other Friday, they buy coupons with their points.

Our first store is tomorrow. Points will be cleared and spent. I am using Christie’s prize pass catalog because they are not tangible items I have to buy and they love them. We added a few specific things, too. Nothing is over 30 points or under 10. I am choosing to clear them out because I do not want them to get to 30 and just quit.

And my parents love it too. They can {and do} go online anytime and see what’s up.

well, I hope I have at least convinced you to visit the site, or even give it a try! And I am still using wbt rules and other features. I normally stop using scoreboard in September anyhow.

Happy managing!!

currently spetember and a giveaway!

I sadly missed out on currently last month, so I left work early today to get it done. Ok, really to let the garage door repairman in…
linking up with Farley-you need to too!

In my head
some explanations:
believe it or not, I just bought my first music on iTunes. I kinda boycotted avoided it, but gave in when I got the email for the B2S 7.99 albums. I heard that darned Hey Ho by The Lumineers and cannot for the life of me get it out of my head. Now if I can only figure out how to get it to play. I swear I am tech savvy, but iTunes and Apple in general give me fits!
I have some freakin’ awesome kids this year. I should give them more credit and in all actuality this should say loving Class Dojo. More on that gem tomorrow!
weight gain, bloating, breakouts, headaches, exhaustion. I am hoping it some sort of hormonal breakdown and not anything else that shall not be mentioned. I really need to get to the doc and get this figured out! Unfortunately Fortunately {not sure which} my doctor’s kiddo is in my class this year! Kinda weird you know.
I really want a new laptop. Nothing spectacular, just newer. I told Mr. Lamb mine’s been acting up. That this baby makes us extra money. That I have to click 50 times to get a link to work. He says it’s just my mouse…errr
favs. I love shows about things I am not. I am a freak about Breaking Bad, but I’m like “Pinkman, who?” since I watched Sons. Mr. Lamb and I finished up season 3 on Netflix yesterday. sheesh. drool, What is it about a dirty guy on a Harley. I tell hubby that we just like guys like Jax, not marry them!! And ever since we started watching, guess who wants a bike…??? It’s not me!
thanks to some ah-ma-zing feedback from my Process Skills pack!
Thinking I will give it away to the first two people who can guess come closest to the estimate for a new garage opener motor I was quoted today! I will send it to you tomorrow!
